Truck tyres

There are several different types of truck tyre – each with it’s own specific characteristics and abilites. When looking to purchase a new set of truck tyres, it is important to consider the type of tyre you will require:

All season – designed to tackle a variety of road and weather conditions throughout the year. Typically long lasting, so good for long haul journeys.
High performance – designed to enhance the handling and cornering capabilities of the truck. Normally more expensive that all season, but deliver greater comfort.
All terrain – designed to transition well between motorway and rough roads without any issue. Generally bigger, with larger tread blocks to deliver strong traction on several road types.

Small Panel Van tyres

Small panel and city vans are, as the name suggests, smaller in nature than the large panel and box vans.

However, they still require tyres that are reinforced with strengthened sidewalls to tackle the rigours of van driving.
Our catalogue features a wide selection of small van tyres, suitbale for fitment on the most popular vans – including Ford Transit Connect, Citroen Berlingo, Renault Kangoo, Fiat Doblo and the Volkswagen Caddy.

Large Panel Van tyres

Like a box van, large panel vans require very specific requirements from their tyres. The need for a reliable and strong tyre is important.

In most cases a large panel van – such as a Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit, Citroen Relay or Peugeot Boxer – requires a tyre with an appropriate ply rating, such as 6ply or 8ply depending on the size and requirements of your vehicle.

Box Van tyres

Box vans require a strong and sturdy tyre.

When looking to buy a new box van tyre we understand that a van owner requires tyres with an ultra-load capabilities and increased longevity.
When shopping for new tyres – whether it is for a Iveco Daily, Renault Master, Ford Luton or Vauxhall Movano – ensure that you select appropriate tyres with an 8ply, 10ply or 12ply ratings. This type of tyre is constructed to meet the demands and weights of a box van.

How to find your 4×4 tyre size

You will find the size of a tyre on its sidewall.

In most cases a tyre’s size will be displayed as follows:
Width | Profile | Rim Size | Load Rating | Speed Rating

with a typical size for a 4×4 tyre being

255 / 65 R16 (109) H

It is worth noting that a 4×4 tyre’s sidewall will differ slightly from a car tyre. On many 4×4 tyres you will find an LT before the tyre size. This stands for light truck and lets you know that the tyre had been constructed to be reinforced and can deal with the extra weight of a 4×4 tyre.
Making the right choice for your 4×4

We know that every motorist has their own unique driving style, so we recommend that when you buy a new tyre for your 4×4 that you consider how it performs in the following criteria:

Wet and dry grip

Handling

Weather performance

Durability

Road noise

High Performance 4×4 Tyres

Over the past twenty years, a new breed of High performance 4X4 vehicles – such as BMW’s X5 and Porsche’ Cayenne – were developed. This new direction in the 4×4 market created the need for high performance road tyres.

Like high performance car tyres, 4×4 tyres in this market typically come designed with directional tread patterns and softer tread compounds. They provide levels of grip and road holding that you would normally associate with a performance car. However these tyres are intended for 95% road use, and will not provide much traction if you choose to leave the road.

All Terrain 4×4 Tyres

All Terrain tyres have been on the market for a number of years. They are ideally suited for 4×4 drivers who like to use their vehicle both on and off road.

For anyone with fears over the performance of an All Terrain tyre on the road every day, these are ungrounded. All Terrain tyres provide very good levels of grip and ride comfort when on tarmac. Due to the tendency for an All-Terrain tyre to be constructed from a harder tread compound, they often boast excellent longevity and can cover up to 60,000+ miles before they need replacing.

Mud Terrain 4×4 Tyres

Mud Terrain tyres, as the name suggests, are more suited for 4×4 owners who use their vehicle primarily for off road usage. They are usually 80% off road to 20% road biased.

To tackle the challenges of off road driving, a mud terrain tyre features tread patterns which have large gaps between its tread blocks – these provide maximum grip and traction off the road. Due to their focus on off road driving, the road performance of a mud terrain tyre does suffer. This is particularly true when it comes to wet breaking distances. This type of tyre is not recommended for the 4×4 owner who covers significant mileage on the road.

Bodywork/Bonnet

The vehicle is checked for any excessive corrosion or damage to the bodywork, vehicle structure and body shell. The bodywork should not exhibit any inappropriate repairs or modifications. If a tow bar is present, this will also be checked to ensure it is secure.

The bonnet should securely latch in the closed position.

Brakes

The efficiency of the vehicle’s braking performance is tested for condition and operation using a rolling road brake tester. If present, the ABS (anti-locking braking system) and ESC (electronic stability control) will be checked to ensure they are operational. Malfunction indicator lamps for ABS, ESC, electronic parking brake (EPB) and brake fluid warning are also tested.

Doors & Load Security

The doors will be checked by the MOT tester to make sure that they open and close correctly and latch in the closed position. Front doors should be operational from both the inside and outside of the vehicle. The rear doors should open from the outside of the vehicle.

The MOT test also ensures your boot or rear door can be secured in the closed position.

Electrical

Checks will be made for visible electrical wiring. The battery will be checked to ensure it is securely housed and shows no sign of leaks. Checks will also be made for visible electrical wiring.

Exhaust System & Emissions

The exhaust system will be inspected and an emissions test carried out to ensure the vehicle meets specified emissions guidelines. The exhaust system must be secure and complete, has no serious leaks and is not producing excessive noise. If your vehicle is fitted with a catalytic converter as standard, this must be present.

Fuel System

The fuel system is checked for leaks, pipes and hoses inspected for damage and the fuel cap must fasten and seal securely. The MOT tester will need to be able to open the fuel cap during the MOT test so if your fuel cap has a lock, make sure the key is available to open this.

Horn

The MOT test will check the horn operates correctly and is suitable for the vehicle it is fitted to.

Registration Plates

The MOT tester will check the condition, security, colour and legibility of the number plate. The format of the numbers and letters must also meet DVSA guidelines and number plates with incorrect formatting and spacing can result in an MOT failure.

Lights

The MOT test checks the condition, operation, security and colour of your vehicles lights. Lights tested include headlights, sidelights, brake lights, indicators, rear fog lights and number plate lights. Reverse lights, front fog lights and internal lights other than malfunction indicator lamps are not included in the test. The MOT tester will also check the headlamp aim is correct and that the main beam warning light is operational.

Mirrors

The mirrors on your vehicle including wing mirrors and rear view mirror are checked to ensure they are all present, secure and do not exhibit damage that affects their functionality.

Seats & Seatbelts

The MOT tester will check the driver’s seat to make sure it can be adjusted and is fitted securely. All other seats are checked for security and the back seats must fasten securely in the upright position.

All seatbelts including those in the rear of the vehicle are checked for type, condition, correct operation and security and that all compulsory seatbelts are in place. The dashboard will also be checked to ensure any warning lights related to the seatbelt operation are functioning. These include airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and seat belt load limiters.

Steering & Suspension

Steering and Suspension components will be checked for condition and correct operation. The MOT tester will test that the steering lock mechanism works correctly and that any relevant dashboard warning lights are functioning properly.

Wheels & Tyres

The MOT tester will examine the tyres to check for irregular wear or damage including cuts, gouges, cracks and bulges. The tread depth will also be checked to ensure it meets minimum legal requirements and the tyre size and type is appropriate for the vehicle. Wheels are examined to ensure that are fixed securely to the vehicle. The spare wheel does not form part of the MOT test and so will not be examined.

In addition, vehicles manufactured from 2012 onwards will be checked to ensure the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light is working correctly.

Wipers & Washer Bottles

The driver must be able to have a clear view of the road, therefore, the windscreens wipers are checked to ensure they are in good condition and can effectively Clearwater and grime from the windscreen. The washers and hoses are also checked to ensure screenwash can be delivered to the windscreen.

Windscreen

The MOT tester will examine the windscreen for any chips or cracks that affect the drivers line of sight. Windscreen mounted sat navs, cameras and their cradles must also be removed to give the tester a clear view of the windscreen.

Vehicle Identification Number

The MOT test checks that the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is legibly displayed on the vehicle. This only applies to vehicles manufactured since 1980.
